Function and Purpose
The Food Science and Nutrition Advisory Council will assist the department in keeping informed concerning the needs of its various constituencies and will advise the department, through its administration and faculty, on ways and means of improving it’s effectiveness. To do this the advisory council will be informed concerning the teaching, research, and outreach programs and plans of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota.
Membership
There are three classes of membership in the council: Industry, Association, and Alumni.
Industry members shall be corporations, organizations or individuals currently or formerly engaged in activities concerned with the production, processing, preparation, and distribution of food and/or nutritional aspects of food.
Association members shall be associations or societies concerned with the interests of the Department. The organization will be contacted annually to reaffirm their desire to participate in the Council.
Alumni members shall be individuals who are graduates of the Department.
Industry and association members shall designate one or more representatives to serve on the advisory council. Members shall be invited upon recommendation of the executive committee or the department head, subject to the qualifications of each class of membership and (where appropriate) to the receipt of dues for the current year.
Executive committee
The executive committee of the council shall include individuals who are representatives of the industry or association memberships of the council and the department head as an ex-officio member.
The executive committee membership shall be by invitation from the Head or the Executive Committee.
The executive committee shall develop policy and establish dues structures for the Council. They shall advise on the use of council funds and the planning of the annual meeting.
The committee will conduct the business of the Council during the year and meet with the department head and other representatives of the department, and advise the head or the department on matters of interest to the department.
The executive committee will elect a chair and vice-chair for purposes of conducting official business.
Meetings
The Executive Committee shall meet not less than twice each year at the call of the department head. The council shall meet not less than once during each year. Persons other than members of the council may be invited to or wish to attend any meeting of the council or executive committee.
Amendments
Amendments of this Statement of Organization and Operation may be made by a mail ballot or a vote at a meeting of the Council based on a majority of those voting.
